Glossary
Technical terms of the Hock Method, anatomy, and pain therapy explained clearly.
A
Anatomical Leg Length Difference
ConditionsA distinction is made between congenital and acquired. It is usually acquired through one-sided twisting of a hip bone. Other causes include joint surgery, total endoprosthesis, or poorly healed fractures in the leg.
Anatomy
GeneralThe study of the form and structure of the human body.
Arthritis/Osteoarthritis
ConditionsDegenerative joint disease where the articular cartilage wears away. According to the Hock Method, arthritis often develops from shortened muscles that reduce the joint space, leading to higher friction and greater cartilage wear.
Atlas
AnatomyThe uppermost cervical vertebra. It is referred to as C1 in medical terminology (C stands for Cervical). An atlas blockage can lead to various complaints such as headaches, dizziness, and neck pain.
Atlas Blockage
ConditionsA misalignment or blockage of the uppermost cervical vertebra (Atlas/C1), which can lead to various complaints such as headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, and neck pain. Treated manually in the Hock Method.
B
Balance
GeneralA balanced state of the body, especially regarding statics and muscle tension. A pelvic tilt disturbs this balance throughout the entire body.
Biochemical Stretching
Hock MethodThe stretching method developed by Burkhard Hock is based on the finding that the first 18 seconds of a stretch are just protective tension from the brain. Only then does real biochemical lengthening begin. Therefore, the 40-second rule is absolutely necessary.
Blockage
ConditionsWhen a joint is in a non-physiological position and the path to the physiological position is only possible with the help of a therapist, naturopath, or doctor.
C
Cervical
AnatomyConcerning the neck. The cervical vertebrae are labeled C1-C7 (C = Cervical).
Cupping
TherapyTraditional therapy procedure from alternative medicine. Through negative pressure in cupping glasses, harmful substances are drawn out through the skin. A distinction is made between wet and dry cupping.
D
Detoxification Therapy
TherapyA therapy to relieve the liver, for example, and rid the body of harmful substances.
Dizziness
ConditionsSubjective disturbance of the body's orientation in space. Can be caused by atlas blockages, pelvic tilt, or inner ear disturbances.
Double Vision
ConditionsWhen the right and left eye see two spatially offset images. Can be caused by atlas blockages or pelvic tilt.
F
Fascial Muscle Chains
AnatomyEvery muscle is surrounded by a sheath (fascia) of collagen fibers. The fascia are connected to each other and form so-called fascial chains. A movement of the hand is thus transmitted via the fascia to the toe muscles.
Fascial Muscle Work (FMW)
Hock MethodA treatment method developed by Burkhard Hock that focuses on treating the muscle fascia. The fascia are interconnected and form fascial chains that run through the entire body.
Flex Taping
Hock MethodA taping method developed by Burkhard Hock that supports treatment and promotes the healing process.
Forty-Second Rule
Hock MethodBasic principle of Hock stretching: The first 18 seconds of a stretch are just protective tension from the brain. Only then does real biochemical lengthening begin. Therefore, each stretch must be held for at least 40 seconds.
Frictions
TherapyRotating finger movement under pressure in the tissue. A manual treatment technique.
Functional
GeneralEffective with respect to a function. A functional pelvic tilt can be corrected through treatment, as opposed to an anatomical one.
G
Golgi Tendon Therapy
Hock MethodThe Golgi apparatus, the muscle's reset button, sits at the muscle-tendon junction. Through targeted pressure for 90 seconds, the brain is signaled: Danger over, relax! This is the most effective method for immediate muscle relaxation.
H
Hematoma
ConditionsBruise in soft tissues or interstitial spaces.
Hip Bone
AnatomyThe hip bone (Os coxae) consists of three parts: the ilium (Os ilium), the pubic bone (Os pubis), and the ischium (Os ischii).
Hip Dysplasia
ConditionsFlattened hip socket, which can lead to instability and wear in the hip joint.
Hip Joint
AnatomyThe hip joint consists of the femoral head and the acetabulum. The femoral head is at the end of the thighbone, the acetabulum is in the hip bone.
Hock Method
Hock MethodThe holistic pain therapy developed by Burkhard Hock, based on 8 pillars: Physics of the body, pelvis as center, the seven problem muscles, Hock stretching, Golgi tendon therapy, movement as diagnostics, prevention in children, and self-responsibility.
Hock Method Database
Hock MethodSince 1991, Burkhard Hock has added more than 37,000 treatments to his database. It contains no personal data, only: female/male, age, pelvic tilt yes/no, type of treatment, problem, and solution. This therapeutic treasure enables precise diagnoses.
Hock Pain Therapy
Hock MethodA therapy developed by Burkhard Hock in close cooperation with university professors, radiologists, physiotherapists, and orthopedic surgeons. Today, almost all orthopedic pain can be successfully treated manually.
Homework (30-Day)
Hock MethodA central component of the Hock Method. If the pelvis is corrected in practice, it tilts back after a few steps. Only the 30-day homework while lying down can change this and permanently correct the pelvic tilt.
I
Irritation
ConditionsOverloading of tissue, often accompanied by inflammation.
L
Levator Scapulae
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles. This muscle elevates the shoulder blade and is frequently involved in neck and shoulder pain.
Load-Bearing Line
AnatomyLeg joints arranged on the vertical axis, from the center of the hip joint (acetabulum) to the center of the ankle joint.
M
Manual
GeneralWith the hand. The Hock Method is a manual form of therapy in which the therapist releases blockages with precise hand work.
Microcurrent Treatment
TherapyMicrocurrent treatment works at the cellular level of a disease. It examines: Are cells being properly controlled? Are cells communicating properly? Are cells being properly supplied or disposed of?
Migraine
ConditionsEpisodic headaches that can last for several days. Migraine is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, neurological deficits, and sensitivity to light and noise. Can be favored by atlas blockages or pelvic tilt.
Muscle Fascia
AnatomyMuscle fascia consist of connective tissue and envelop individual muscles or muscle groups. They are part of the fascial chains.
Muscle Soreness
ConditionsPainful muscle fatigue after unusually long or strong exertion due to accumulation of lactic acid and micro-injuries to muscle fibers.
O
Orthopedic Home Pharmacy
Hock MethodThe three-volume standard work by Burkhard Hock for patient self-help. It explains the causes of pain and provides instructions for self-treatment of all joints.
P
Pelvic Tilt
ConditionsAccording to Burkhard Hock, a pelvic tilt is the cause of 90% of all orthopedic problems. It usually occurs due to a fall or misstep and leads to a lateral S-shaped curvature of the spine (scoliosis). The Hock Method addresses the cause here, not the symptom.
Penzel Acupuncture Massage
TherapyPenzel Acupuncture Massage is a gentle massage technique based on the rules of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a holistic application that is tailored to the individual energy balance of the patient. Light strokes along the meridian pathways activate the disturbed energy flow and ensure improved self-regulation of the body's energy balance.
Periosteum
AnatomyThe periosteum reacts to pressure and is usually very sensitive. It plays an important role in pain perception.
Photon Irradiation
TherapyPhotons are parts of electromagnetic radiation. This is used for treatment to achieve deeper blood circulation.
Physiology
GeneralThe study of normal life processes in the human body.
Piriformis
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles. This pear-shaped muscle lies deep in the buttocks and can compress the sciatic nerve when shortened (piriformis syndrome).
Popliteus
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles. This small muscle in the back of the knee is frequently involved in knee pain and knee instability.
Prevention in Children
Hock MethodThe critical window for development is between 12 and 20 years. During this time, the SI joint interlocks in its position. What goes wrong here determines health for a lifetime.
Psoas
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles and the most important hip flexor. The psoas often fixates a pelvic tilt and is involved in many back pain conditions.
Pterygoid
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles. This chewing muscle is frequently involved in jaw joint problems, headaches, and tinnitus.
Q
Quadratus Lumborum
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles. This quadrate lumbar muscle is frequently involved in lower back pain and pelvic tilt.
R
Rotation
GeneralTwisting. A rotation of the pelvis or vertebrae leads to misalignments throughout the entire body.
S
Sacroiliac Joint
AnatomyThe sacroiliac joint connects the ilium to the sacrum. See also SI joint.
Sacroiliac Joint (SI Joint)
AnatomyThe sacroiliac joint connects the ilium to the sacrum. It is central to the statics of the pelvis and can twist due to a fall or misstep.
Sciatica
ConditionsInflammation of the sciatic nerve, which supplies the entire leg. Often caused by pelvic tilt or piriformis syndrome.
Scoliosis
ConditionsLateral curvature of the spine, usually associated with a twist. According to the Hock Method, every pelvic tilt causes scoliosis. A distinction is made between congenital and acquired scoliosis.
Stretching Therapy
TherapyMuscles that shorten and thus leave their naturally intended structure are usually the cause of muscle and joint complaints. In stretching therapy, the shortened muscles are stretched to eliminate these negative influences on the body.
Structural Osteopathy
TherapyTreatment of the active and passive musculoskeletal system. It deals with the biomechanics of joints, muscles, ligaments, vessels, and lymph.
Supraspinatus
AnatomyOne of the seven problem muscles. Part of the rotator cuff, frequently involved in shoulder pain.
T
The Seven Problem Muscles
Hock MethodOf over 600 muscles, only 8 are responsible for 70% of pain. These small but harmful muscles are: Quadratus Lumborum, Psoas, Levator Scapulae, Popliteus, Piriformis, Supraspinatus, and Pterygoideus. Knowing and treating these muscles is the key.
Tinnitus
ConditionsRinging ear noise without an external sound source. Can be caused by atlas blockages, jaw joint problems, or pterygoid tension.
Total Endoprosthesis
GeneralReplacement of an entire joint (both joint parts). According to the Hock Method, many joint surgeries can be avoided if the cause is treated.
Trigger Point Treatment
TherapyPain point treatment in the muscle. Trigger points are hypersensitive spots in tense muscle fibers.
U
Ultrasound
TherapyWaves with a frequency between 20kHz and 1 GHz, inaudible to humans. Used to improve deep blood circulation.
V
Vertebral Blockage
ConditionsA misalignment or blockage of a vertebra that can lead to pain and restricted movement. Treated manually in the Hock Method.
